System Requirements for Operating Systems

BeOS 5 for Intel Architecture

  • 133 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU.
  • 32 megabytes of RAM.
  • An IDE or SCSI hard disk or hard disk partition with 200 megabytes of space (or 600 MB of disk space free on C: for BeOS 5 Personal Edition).
  • An IDE/ATAPI or SCSI CD-ROM drive.
  • A graphics card capable of VESA graphics.
  • USB, PS/2, or serial connected mouse and keyboard.

BeOS 5 for PowerPC

  • PowerPC Processor.
  • 32 megabytes of RAM minimum, more recommended.
  • 150 megabyte hard disk or hard disk partition (SCSI or IDE). Running on a 100 meg partition, e.g., on a Zip drive is possible but not recommended.
  • CD-ROM drive (SCSI or IDE).
  • Keyboard and mouse compatible with your hardware. ADB mouse and keyboard for Macintosh compatible systems, serial or PS/2 mouse and standard PC-style keyboard for BeBox systems. A two (or more) button mouse is recommended. An extended keyboard is recommended.
  • Built-in or bundled graphics circuitry or card.
  • Multisync monitor strongly recommended.
  • Network connection via Ethernet or PPP (modem, serial ISDN, etc.) recommended.

Corel Linux

  • Pentium or Pentium-compatible processor.
  • 24 MB RAM (64 MB RAM recommended).
  • 500 MB of hard disk space.
  • CD-ROM drive.
  • 2 MB VGA PCI card.
  • Mouse.

Mac OS 8.6

  • iMac, Power Macintosh G3, Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White), Any Power Macintosh, PowerBook, or Workgroup Server computer with a 4-digit model number.
  • 190 MB to 250 MB free disk space (full install of Mac OS 8.5 and Mac OS 8.6 Update), or 50 MB free disk space when only updating with Mac OS 8.6 Update.
  • At least 24 megabytes (MB) of random-access memory (RAM) installed; 32 MB is recommended.

Mac OS 9.1

  • Mac OS-based Apple computer with a PowerPC processor (PowerPC upgrade cards and 680X0 processors are NOT supported. See note below). Mac OS X Server IS NOT supported (MacOS.app). NetBoot images on Mac OS X Server are supported, but require a Mac OS 9 license for each NetBoot client.
  • 150 MB to 250 MB for an easy install (though a universal install can be up to 400 MB) of free disk space, depending on options selected, and drive size and format.
  • 40 MB of RAM (32 MB of physical RAM, with virtual memory set to at least 40 MB).
  • The minimum amount of RAM will let the computer perform only at minimum speeds. Installing additional RAM will increase the system performance.

Mac OS X

  • Power Mac G4 ( Power Mac G4 - 5-Slot, Power Mac G4 - AGP Graphics, Power Mac G4 - PCI Graphics, Macintosh Server G4, Power Mac G4 Cube).
  • iMac( iMac (Bondi Blue), iMac (5 Flavors), iMac DV, iMac/iMac DV+/DV SE (slot loading), iMac (CD-RW)).
  • PowerBook( PowerBook G4, PowerBook G3 Series, PowerBook G3 (USB), PowerBook G3 (USB & FireWire)).
  • iBook( iBook, iBook SE, iBook (FireWire), iBook SE (FireWire)).
  • Power Mac G3( Power Macintosh G3 (All-In-One, Desktop, Mini Tower, Server), Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White), (processor upgrade cards not supported)).
  • 128MB of Memory (RAM) is recommended for using Mac OS X.
  • At least 1.5 GB of available space on your hard drive.

Mandrake Linux 8.0

  • Pentium-compatible CPU.
  • 64 MB RAM for graphical interface (32 MB for text installation).
  • 500 MB available disk (800 MB recommended).
  • CD-ROM drive.

Windows 2000 Advanced Server

  • 133 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU.
  • 256 MB of RAM recommended minimum (128 MB minimum supported; 8 GB maximum).
  • 2 GB hard disk with a minimum of 1.0 GB free space. (Additional free hard disk space is required if you are installing over a network.).
  • Supports up to eight CPUs on one machine.

Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

  • Pentium III Xeon processors or higher.
  • 256 megabytes (MB) of RAM recommended.
  • 2 gigabyte (GB) hard disk with a minimum of 1 GB free space. (Additional free hard disk space is required if you are installing over a network.).
  • CD-ROM or DVD drive.
  • VGA or higher resolution monitor.
  • 8-way capable or higher server (supports up to 32-way)( Note: Fault-tolerant system configurations are required to have at least 8 processors within the hardware solution).

Windows 2000 Professional

  • 133 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU.
  • 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM recommended minimum; more memory generally improves responsiveness.
  • 2GB hard disk with a minimum of 650MB of free space.
  • Supports single and dual CPU systems.

Windows 2000 Server

  • 133 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU.
  • 256 megabytes (MB) of RAM recommended minimum [128 MB minimum supported; 4 gigabytes (GB) maximum].
  • 2 GB hard disk with a minimum of 1.0 GB free space. (Additional free hard disk space is required if you are installing over a network.).
  • Supports up to four CPUs on one machine.

Windows 95

  • 386DX or higher processor (486 recommended).
  • 4 megabytes (MB) of memory (8 MB recommended).
  • Typical hard disk space required to upgrade to Windows 95: 35-40 MB The actual requirement varies depending on the features you choose to install.
  • Typical hard disk space required to install Windows 95 on a clean system: 50-55 MB The actual requirement varies depending on the features you choose to install.
  • One 3.5-inch high-density floppy disk drive.
  • VGA or higher resolution (256-color SVGA recommended).
  • Optional components: Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device, Modem or fax/modem, Audio card and speakers for sound.

Windows 98 Second Edition

  • 486DX/66 MHz or higher processor.
  • 24 MB RAM; more memory improves performance.
  • Typical installation requires approximately 205 MB of available hard-disk space (includes 45 MB average for backup files during installation), but may range between 140 MB and 315 MB, depending upon system configuration and options selected.
  • CD-ROM or DVD-ROM Drive.
  • VGA or higher resolution monitor.
  • Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device.
  • For sound: Sound card with speakers or headphones, OR USB speakers (requires PC with USB support).
  • For DVD Video: DVD ROM Drive, Compatible DVD decoder card or DVD decoder software.
  • For Broadcast TV and Web reception: Compatible TV tuner card, Pentium or higher processor, Additional 65 MB of hard-disk space, Reception depends on availability of broadcast sources in your area.
  • For Internet Connection Sharing: Network connection between the connection host computer and other computer devices sharing internet access.

Windows Me

  • VGA or higher resolution monitor.
  • Pentium 150MHz processor or better.
  • 32MB of RAM or better.
  • Minimum 480MB to 645MB free hard-disk space.
  • CD-ROM drive.
  • 28.8 Kbs modem or faster with current Internet connection.
  • Sound card.
  • Speakers or headphones.
  • Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device.
  • For Windows Media Player: SVGA Monitor, Pentium 166MHz processor or better, 64MB of RAM, 1GB free hard-disk space recommended.
  • For DVD video playback: DVD-ROM drive, DVD decoder card or software.
  • For Windows Movie Maker: SVGA Monitor, Pentium II 300MHz processor or better, 64MB of RAM, 2GB free hard-disk space recommended, 56.6 Kbs modem or faster with current Internet connection, Good quality microphone, video capture device.
  • For WebTV: Pentium-compatible or equivalent TV tuner card.

Windows XP Home Edition

  • PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required.
  • Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended.
  • 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features).
  • 1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.
  • Super VGA (800 X 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor.
  • CD-ROM or DVD drive.
  • Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device.
  • For Internet access: Some Internet functionality may require Internet access, a Microsoft .NET Passport account, and payment of a separate fee to a service provider; local and/or long-distance telephone toll charges may apply, 14.4 Kbps or higher-speed modem.
  • For networking: Network adapter appropriate for the type of local-area, wide-area, wireless, or home network you wish to connect to, and access to an appropriate network infrastructure; access to third-party networks may require additional charges.
  • For instant messaging, voice and video conferencing, and application sharing, both parties need: Microsoft .NET Passport account and Internet access.
  • For voice and video conferencing, both parties also need: 33.6 Kbps or higher-speed modem, or a network connection, Microphone and sound card with speakers or headset.
