The 3M Precise Mousing Surface is probably the only advance in mouse pad technology that will happen. Instead of a normal pad wear the surface is just cloth, the precision mouse pad uses a special design to improve mouse movement. The surface is made up of very microscopic peaks and valleys, the dust and dirt ends up in the valleys. Therefore ball mice don't get as much dirt in them. The net effect is that the mouse moves easily and requires less cleaning. The surface also allows the mouse to move faster with less slippage.

The best part about the mouse pad is its versatility. The mouse pad is made up of the thin surface and rubber bottom. The mouse pad can be used on its own, or it can be attached to a normal mouse pad with adhesive if you want a thicker surface. The mouse pad is good for use with optical mice, because you don't need a full mouse pad it provides you with a smooth surface to work on. This is important because depending on the surface your mouse is on the optical sensor may not work. It is thin enough that it can be cut with a household knife. There is also a version that has an gel wrist pad attached to one end of the pad.
